Lovework Open Call

Attention all writers, thinkers and game changers!

Guerrilla Translation is excited to announce our first Love Work Open Call, a unique opportunity for you to propose a text to have translated, published online and promoted within different linguistic communities.

Part of Guerrilla Translation’s unique model is that we actively create commons by selecting texts to translate pro bono and publish them under an open licence on our blog, sharing important and inspiring ideas across linguistic borders. We call this Love Work

We generally sniff out and chase down these texts ourselves, but lately we’ve been wondering what gems are out there that we may be overlooking. So dear community, show us what you’ve got! Dust off that unpublished article or finish up that brand new manifesto and send it our way to be considered for translation into Spanish or English!

But first, let’s explain a bit more about what we have in mind.

Love Work is…

  • an opportunity to broaden your audience through transcultural and translinguistic exchange.
  • commons-positive, promoting the free movement and sharing of knowledge. All translations are published on Guerrilla Translation’s blog and promoted via our social media channels.
  • subversive, removing economic barriers to the translation and republication of radical texts. We focus on themes related to activism, antiracism, feminism, environmental protection, anticolonialism, new economies, P2P/Commons and post-capitalism.
  • translator-oriented, as we also see this as an opportunity to dedicate our skills to promoting issues that speak to our hearts and our own personal ideals. This is activism via translation.
  • pro bono. We do Love Work of our own volition without any monetary compensation.
  • solidarity, not charity. It’s all about uplifting voices that we want to hear more from.

Love Work is not…

  • a free service. In fact, it’s not a service at all – it’s a mutual collaboration and entirely removed from our Livelihood Work, i.e. paid translation agency work.
  • a money maker, as translations will be published under a Peer Production Licence, which does not entitle the author to make any profit from the translation. On the other hand we do hope that you’ll use the translation to promote yourself and your work!
  • racist, transphobic, homophobic, capitalist, neo-colonial you get the picture. This should go without saying, but you can never be too careful. Have questions about who we are and what we stand for? You can read some history here and here, and check out our new agency website here.
  • more than 5000 words. Until a post-money utopia is realised, we still have bills to pay, so we need to limit ourselves to essays, articles and other pieces of 5000 words or less.

NOTE: For the moment, we are able to translate Love Work from English, Spanish, German, French and Catalan into either Spanish or English.

We look forward to reading your work and helping you share your ideas! All submissions are due by December 20th, and we will do our best to get back to you within a few weeks. Please direct all submissions or enquiries to hello@guerrillamedia.coop.
