Love Work Open Call, Round 2

It’s that time again! We were so pleased with our first Love Work Open Call that Guerrilla Translation’s English team has decided to launch round two. In case you missed it, since the first open call we’ve been translating the fabulous zine Descuartizadora 1 and publishing it in instalments as we work our way through its contents. Once everything has been completed, Descuartizadora will compile all the English translations and release a fully formatted English language version of the zine, which we’ll make available as well. We can’t wait!

That said, we’re already looking ahead to what other gems may come our way in the future. To that end, we would like to launch round two of the Lovework Open Call! As a reminder, “Love Work” is a part of Guerrilla Translation’s unique model whereby we actively create commons by selecting texts to translate pro bono and publishing them under an open licence on our blog. The idea is to break down the linguistic barriers that keep important ideas, art, politics and culture from reaching a larger audience.

In the past we have chased down these texts ourselves, but our first open call taught us that sometimes the best material is what you didn’t know you were looking for in the first place. So let’s see what else you’ve got for us this time!

In Round 2, we’re looking for…

  • Works in Spanish, French, Catalan or German to be translated into English.
  • Something a bit out of the ordinary – poetry, science fiction, experimental writing, radical manifestos… We’re open to any genre, but we highly encourage submissions of fiction and creative writing.
  • Texts not exceeding 5000 words – there’s some flexibility with this but we do have bills to pay, so we need to be realistic with how much time we can dedicate to pro-bono work until our post-capitalist utopia takes hold.

Love Work is…

  • an opportunity to broaden your audience through transcultural and translinguistic exchange.
  • commons-positive, promoting the free movement and sharing of knowledge. All translations are published on Guerrilla Translation’s blog and promoted via our social media channels.
  • subversive, removing economic barriers to the translation and republication of radical texts. We focus on themes related to activism, antiracism, feminism, environmental protection, anticolonialism, new economies, P2P/Commons and post-capitalism.
  • translator-oriented, as we also see this as an opportunity to dedicate our skills to promoting issues that speak to our hearts and our own personal ideals. This is activism via translation.
  • pro bono. We do Love Work of our own volition without any monetary compensation.
  • solidarity, not charity. It’s all about uplifting voices that we want to hear more from.

Love Work is not…

  • a free service. In fact, it’s not a service at all – it’s a mutual collaboration and entirely removed from our Livelihood Work, i.e. paid translation agency work.
  • a money maker, as translations will be published under a Peer Production Licence, which does not entitle the author to make any profit from the translation. On the other hand we do hope that you’ll use the translation to promote yourself and your work!
  • racist, transphobic, homophobic, capitalist, neo-colonial you get the picture. This should go without saying, but you can never be too careful. Have questions about who we are and what we stand for? You can read some history here and here, and check out our new agency website here

We look forward to reading and sharing your work! All submissions are due by October 1, 2023, and we will do our best to get back to you within a few weeks. Please direct all submissions or enquiries to hello@guerrillamedia.coop.
